Main Chararcters;
Leela: is a 13-year-old Indian girl of the Bhramin's caste. She was engaged at two, had her anu, and she was married at nine and was planning at 13 to move into the home of her husband Ramanlal.
Ba: Leela's mother who spoils Leela and cares about her. She wants the best for Leela but she doesn't respect how Leela wants to live after being widowed. Ba argues a lot with her sister (Leela's aunt) Masi.
Bapuji: Leela's father who doesn't spoil her a lot and he is very strict to Leela. He doesn't like how Leela wants to live her own life as a widow and he doesn't understand why Leela wants to break tradition to live her own life the way she wants to.
Kanubhai: Leelas older brother and only sibling who goes to a boarding school in the big city. He is basically shunned from his family because he wants to help Leela break tradition so she can live her own life.
Saviben: Leela's teacher who cares for leela's education since shes widowed and teaches her how to read, write, history, and math.
Masi: Leela'a aunt who doesn't like how Leela is spoiled by her mom. Shes loving but is very harsh towards leela because she is a spoiled girl.
Ramanlal: Leela's husband who dies from a deadly snake bite. He is very kind and mannerly and both families love him because he's caring towards leela and he would of made a good father.
Shani: Leelas cousin who she envies and hates her because she is beautiful, creates mirror work, and has a good husband. But throughout the novel Leela and Shani get along well.
